How distracted driving impacts everyone on the road

Most people think of distracted driving as using your phone while behind the wheel. The truth is that distraction comes in many forms, such as adjusting the radio, eating, reaching for something behind your seat, talking with your passengers or daydreaming.

Unfortunately, it only takes a moment of inattention to change someone’s life. And when a driver is distracted, it affects everyone sharing the road.

What counts as distracted driving?

Distracted driving occurs when a person attempts to drive while engaged in another activity. It typically falls into three categories:

  1. Visual distraction: looking away from the road
  2. Manual distraction: removing your hands from the steering wheel
  3. Cognitive distraction: thinking of things other than driving

People like to believe they can multitask. However, the brain can’t fully focus on two complex tasks at the same time. Every shift away from the task of driving slows reaction time. This creates a dangerous situation for everyone on the road, including:

  • Other drivers who may be forced to swerve or brake suddenly
  • Vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists who have little time to react
  • The passengers in the distracted driver’s vehicle who pay the price for the driver’s bad decisions

Looking away from the road for just five seconds at highway speeds is like driving blindfolded down the length of a football field. Those few moments can mean the difference between driving safely and causing a crash.

Beyond injuries, distracted driving accidents impact the community at large as they can lead to property damage and higher insurance rates for everyone.

Everyone can help to reduce distracted driving accidents:

  • Put your phone away or use the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” mode
  • Set your GPS, climate controls and playlist before driving
  • Eat before your trip
  • If you’re a parent, be an example to your children
  • If you’re a passenger, don’t be afraid to speak up and remind the driver to focus on the road

Being injured or losing a loved one in a crash caused by a distracted driver is traumatic. But you don’t have to face the aftermath alone. Discuss your situation with someone who can guide you through the process of pursuing compensation for lost wages, medical expenses and other damages.
