One of the most exciting moments for Connecticut teens is getting their driver’s license. This gives them a sense of independence and adventure, but it can trigger anxiety in their parents. As new drivers, teenagers must use the following safe driving tips.
Always buckle up
Using seatbelts is not only the law, but it can also keep you safe in the event of motor vehicle accidents. Buckling up should be the first thing you do when you get behind the wheel, and it should become second nature as you gain experience. Also, ensure any passengers use their seatbelts before you even turn on the ignition.
Continue practicing
Even if you already have your driver’s license, continue to practice as often as possible. It can hone your driving skills and keep you sharper and safer. Drive alone or take the opportunity to give family members rides when they need them.
Avoid distractions
Even seasoned adult drivers are sometimes guilty of distracted driving, which poses risks for accidents. Put your phone on silent or do not disturb mode and avoid eating, grooming or any other activity that takes your mind off the road.
Follow traffic laws
Follow all traffic laws and be mindful of your speed. Yield to other vehicles and pedestrians, slow down and prepare to stop when the light is yellow and use your signal when turning or switching lanes.
Follow at a safe distance
A major reason why accidents happen is because drivers tailgate. Follow the vehicle ahead of you at a safe distance of at least one full car’s length. If you’re behind a truck, give at least one second for every 10 feet of length. This ensures you’re not in the trucker’s blind spot and they can see you.
Stay sober
Avoid alcohol or drugs when you plan on driving. Staying sober can prevent accidents and possibly save your life and the lives of others.
